Supporting Children with Additional Needs at Little Hearts

At Little Hearts, we have a dedicated SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) in each nursery, supported by a specialised SEND team that provides guidance and assistance. This team is committed to ensuring that all children receive the best possible start in life. By collaborating with parents, children, and the nursery SENCo, they set high aspirations for those with additional needs and implement practices that enhance outcomes. Additionally, the SEND team offers in-house training to enhance the knowledge and skills of all staff regarding additional support.

Creating an Inclusive Environment

Enrolling in a high-quality, inclusive setting can significantly benefit young children who may be at risk of facing inequality or discrimination. To be an inclusive provider, Kids Planet is proactive in addressing barriers to inclusion, such as negativity, bias, and stereotyping. Effective inclusive practices ensure that all children have access to opportunities and support during their crucial early years, fostering their confidence and aspirations for the future. Kids Planet is well-equipped to create a safe space where parents, staff, and children can learn about each other’s differences and similarities, cultivating empathy and mutual respect.

Applications for Education, Health, and Care Plans

Typically, children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities are supported through a Graduated Approach that incorporates strategies and interventions from external specialists. However, to achieve the best outcomes and provide comprehensive support for children transitioning to school, settings can request the Local Authority to conduct an assessment of the child’s needs and develop an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP). The Nursery SENDCo at Little Hearts will lead this process, involving parents and collaborating with an Educational Psychologist. At this stage, the Little Hearts SEND Team can discuss various local school options that may best suit the child’s needs.
